Treble hope for St Michael's

The St Michael's Athy club were celebrating on the treble on Friday night after three of their boxers came through their preliminary round bouts at the Open Senior Competition at the National Stadium in Dublin.

Irish 2008 Olympian John Joe Joyce, David Joyce and Hugh Joyce all had their hands raised in victory at the home of Irish boxing.

Reigning heavyweight champion Con Sheehan also emerged victories courtesy of a 10-4 win over Willie Byrne.

Tom Blaney, Brian Brosnan, Stephen O'Reilly and Jimmy Sweeney also received positive verdicts at the South Circular Road venue.

The Open Senior competition will recommence with ten semi-final bouts on Saturday night.

The finals will take place on Friday 10 October at the National Stadium. Each session will begin at 7.30pm with the weigh-in between 8.30am and 9.30am.

The Irish Amateur Boxing Association are using the Open Senior Competition as part of their selection process for November’s European Senior Championships in Liverpool.
