Irish 2008 Olympian John Joe Joyce will get the Open Senior Competition underway with a preliminary round bout
against John Murray at the National Stadium on Friday night.

Joyce, the reigning Irish light welterweight champion and from the St Michael's Athy club, bowed out of last August’s Olympics at the last sixteen stage after he was beaten on a count-back by Felix Diaz of the Dominican Republic, who went on to claim gold in Beijing.

In the other bouts, reigning Irish heavyweight champion Con Sheehan will be in preliminary round action versus Willie Byrne tonight.

The Open Senior Competition will commence with eight bouts this evening followed by a further ten bouts tomorrow night.

The finals will take place on Friday 10 October at the National Stadium.

Each session will begin at 7.30pm. The weigh-in for each session will be held between 8.30am and 9.30am at the National Stadium.

The Irish Amateur Boxing Association are using the Open Senior Competition as part of their selection process for November’s European Senior Championships in Liverpool.
