Former World champion and double Olympic medal winner Jerome Thomas has been named in the French squad for next week’s training and sparring camp with Ireland and England at the National Stadium in Dublin.
French 2008 Olympians Alexis Bastine, John Mbumba and Khedafa Bjelkhir have also been selected to travel to Dublin.
Bjelkhir has happy memories of the National Stadium as he beat Ireland’s Carl Frampton in a thrilling featherweight European Union Championships final at the South Circular Road venue last June and also picked up the boxer of the tournament award.
England have also named a very strong squad, which includes reigning World lightweight champion and 2008 Olympian Frankie Gavin.
France have not named a light flyweight in their squad which could mean that Irish light flyweight senior champion and 2008 Olympian Paddy Barnes will spar with Thomas, who won bronze at flyweight for his country at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney and claimed a silver medal at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
Thomas won his world title in Barnes' home town of Belfast at the World Championships which were held in Northern Ireland in 2001.
The National Stadium sparring sessions will begin at 3.30pm next Monday and a test match between the three nations could take place on Wednesday at 4.30pm.
The sparring sessions are open to the public.
The Irish, English and French squads are using the National Stadium training and sparring camp to prepare for the Olympic Games and the second last Olympic qualifier for European boxers in Pescara, Italy, between 24 February and 3 March.
Ireland will depart for their final training camp in Rome on 16 February before travelling to Pescara.
