Ireland top EU medal table

Irish boxers dominated the fifth European Union Championships at the National Stadium in Dublin today claiming three gold and two silver medals to finish on top of the medal table.

Irish captain Ken Egan, Darren Sutherland and Roy Sheehan have all finished in pole position at the South Circular Road venue.

Carl Frampton and Cathal McMonagle both landed silver on an incredible day for Irish boxing.

Sheehan - of the St Michael's Athy club - won the welterweight final with Xavier Noel after the French man had to retire in the fourth with a cut over his right eye with both boxers locked at 10-10.

St Saviours Dublin middleweight Sutherland followed that up with victory over James Degale beating the Englishman 23-19, and Egan, of the Neilstown club in Dublin, bossed Romanian Constantin Bejenaru to win 23-17.

Earlier today, Carl Frampton from the Midland White City club in Belfast had to be content with silver after losing his featherweight final to boxer of the tournament award winner Khdeafi Djelkhirn from France.

Super heavyweight Cathal McMonagle, who boxes out of the Holy Trinity club in Belfast, also had to settle for silver after he was beaten 20-8 by world number one Roberto Cammarelle from Italy.

However, it was a brave performance from Donegal-born McMonagle, who had the crowd on their feet during Friday's semi-final.
