A track and field athlete, a rugby player and a boxer received bans under the Irish Sports Council's anti-doping programme last year.

Irish-based Tomas Rauktys, a discus and shot putt thrower from Lithuania, was banned for two years for steroid use.

Young Munster's John Moroney was banned for three months when he tested for cannabis.

Boxer Sean Turner was given a 12-month ban after he failed to disclose his whereabouts by the required deadline for a third time in the space of 18 months.

Despite the bans, the council says it is very encouraged that just one Irish athlete has tested positive in an extensive retrospective testing programme carried out in Germany.
