Race walker Rob Heffernan crowned off his year by being named as Athletics Ireland Athlete of the year.

The Togher AC athlete took the award for this gold-medal-winning performance in the 50km Race Walk at the World Championship in Moscow last August.

The Endurance Athlete Award went to Fionnuala Britton (Kilcoole AC) who successfully defended her European Cross Country title in Hungary.

On that occasion Britton also led the senior women’s team to an historic team gold medal.

The Track and Field Athlete of the Year was awarded to Mark English (UCD AC) after he produced a number of high quality performances on the track.

The Letterkenny native ran the second fastest time ever by an Irishman over 800m at the diamond league meeting in London when he ran a time of 1.44.84.

Ciaran O’Lionaird (Leevale AC) received the Indoor Track and Field Athlete Award for his exploits at the European Championship in Gothenburg,
