Hession through to semi-finals

Paul Hession is through to the semi-finals of the 200 metres at the European Athletics Championships in Barcelona.

The Athenry sprinter finished second in his heat in a time to 20.69 seconds, .01 of a second behind heat winner Marlon Devonish.

Hession's time was the fifth fastest overall. Hession later finished fourth in his semi-final, enough to secure a place in the final as one of two fastest losers.

UCD's Steven Colvert was the only other Irish athlete competing in the event and he failed to progess after finishing seventh in his heat.

Alistair Cragg finished sixth in the first heat of the 5000m in a time of 13.37.66 but qualified for the Saturday's final as a fastest loser.

Cragg led his heat with two-and-a-half laps to go but was outpaced from there on and had to fight hard to take sixth. Ethiopian born Hayle Ibrahimov, running for Azerbaijjan, won the race in a time of 13:32.98.

Mark Christie finished 11th in the second heat.
