Davenport wins Mini-Marathon

Marie Davenport has won the Flora Womens' Marathon in Dublin.

The Clare native who is now based in the United States took the honours in a time of 33 minutes 14 seconds.

It was her first time to run in the event and afterwards she confirmed that she has set her sights on running the marathon for Ireland at next summer's Olympic Games in Bejing.

Rosemary Ryan from Limerick was second while last year's winner Pauline Curley finished third.

At the Cork marathon, the men's race was won by Alan O'Shea from Bantry Athletic Club in a time of 2:27:36.

The women's race was won by Tracy Guilfoyle from Killnaboy in Clare in a time of 3:01:53.

Meanwhile, the European Athletics Association has announced that Ireland is one of three countries bidding to host the European Cross-Country Championships in 2009.

The Irish bid faces competition from Poland and France.

All three nations will make a presentation to stage the event on 15 October.
