Hickey misses out as Rogge is re-elected

Britain's Craig Reedie has beaten Ireland's Pat Hickey to a seat on the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) executive board.

Hickey had been expected to secure the seat but the IOC have historically elected one person from an Olympic host nation for the period covering the Games. With the 2010 Games looming large on the horizon, Reedie will be the man to fulfil that role.

The former chairman of the British Olympic Association defeated Hickey by 52 to 39 votes.

Australian John Coates, who last year described England as a nation of 'few swimming pools and little soap', won the other available seat on the executive board.

Jacques Rogge was re-elected as president of organisation.

Rogge held onto his position for a new four-year term, with 88 votes in his favour, one against and three abstentions.

New rules allowed the former Olympic yachtsman and rugby union international to stand for a final four-year mandate.

'You have given me a great honour. We have accomplished a lot together,' Rogge said. 'Our focus now is on the future.'

The 67-year-old Belgian was first elected for eight years in 2001 in Moscow and will now be in place through the 2012 London Olympics before stepping down a year later.
