Byrne finishes eighth in freestyle

Ireland's Eilish Byrne finished eighth on Wednesday in her Grade II Freestyle dressage competition at the 2008 Paralympics in Hong Kong.

The competition was held in two parts, a morning and an evening session, to avoid the afternoon heat at Sha Tin.

Riding her 12 year-old Dutch-bred gelding 'Youri', Dundalk-born Byrne was one of 17 competitors in today's test, and completed on a score of 65.833%.

This was an improvement on her first competition on Monday, when she finished 11th overall in the Individual Championship.

Canada's Lauren Barwick, riding 'Maile', was the Grade II Freestyle gold medal winner, on a score of 72.776%, while the silver medal went to Britain's Felcity Coulthard (71.056), and the bronze to German rider Britta Naepel (70.277).
