Gas scare forces Ireland to evacuate

The South Africa, Pakistan, Canada and Ireland World Cup teams escaped unhurt after a gas leak forced the evacuation of their hotel in Port of Spain today.

Sixty players from the four teams were told to leave the building by security staff at the Hilton Hotel.

Three members of staff were taken to hospital, but no representatives of any of the teams were hurt.

'Shortly after the blast, which occurred on the eighth floor of the hotel at about 0800 (Trinidad and Tobago), all guests were evacuated and taken to safety by emergency personnel,' said Cricket South Africa's media liaison officer, Gordon Templeton, in a statement.

'It is unclear as to what caused the blast but the entire team is safe and calm has returned to the hotel.'
