Galway stay in touch with home win

Tony Cousins' Galway United grabbed a critical Terryland Park 1-0 win over Cobh Ramblers tonight to keep their play-off dream alive.

Galway carved several goalscoring opportunities in an interesting opening period. Ciaran Foley and Frannie Carter bossed the midfield exchanges as Galway settled into a neat passing rhythm.

Davie O'Dowd's perseverance fashioned a goal for Derek O'Brien in the 16th minute.

O'Dowd released the pacey winger, who managed to crash home from an acute angle.

O'Brien tested the reflexes of James McCarthy on the half hour, while Ciaran Foley also had a shot gathered by the visitors buy goalkeeper.

On the cusp of half-time Conor Gethins curled a shot wide following a eat Frannie Carter assist.

It was tense and uncompromising after the interval as United were unable to test McCarthy again.

Foley did strike wide from distance in the 47th minutes, but there was little goalmouth incident thereafter with only Dave Warren going close for Cobh in stoppage time.

Both managers introduced substitutes in an effort to inject some creativity into the contest, but Galway held out for a satisfying success.
