Galway held at Terryland Park
Friday, 3 November 2006There was plenty of late controversy as referee Padraig Sutton assumed centre stage in a 1-1 draw at Terryland Park.
Davie O'Dowd had a 76th minute goal controversially disallowed, while the home side were denied a penalty when the referee failed to penalise Ian Malone for handling the ball in the area.
Initially Galway moved the ball with pace and purpose, as promising youngster John Russell announced his return to the starting XI with an assured performance.
Russell's able midfield sidekick Frannie Carter was similarly industrious as Galway seized the initiative early on.
Out wide, Dave Cooke and Derek O'Brien were busy on the flanks as United eventually pilfered a 23rd minute lead.
Davie O'Dowd's bustling run carved the opportunity for Conor Gethins, who slid home his 14th league goal of the season from close range.
Steve McCrossan crashed home a splendid 66th minute equaliser from 25 yards as Kildare thundered into the contest.
Galway regained control, however, and Dave Cooke, Billy Clery, and ODowd all squandered opportunities in a hectic finale.
