Ebor shock as Mudawin prevails
Wednesday, 23 August 2006 15:35Mudawin, sent off at odds of 100-1, came with a late surge to win a thrilling renewal of the totesport Ebor at York.
Jane Chapple-Hyam's charge emerged from the clouds under John Egan to claim the valuable handicap with a head to spare from Glistening.
Young Mick was third, a short-head further adrift, while Geordieland was fourth.
Carrying bottom weight, Mudawin looked to have it all to do once River Alhaarth swept past early pacesetter Elusive Dream three furlongs from home.
And although he was travelling well enough, Mudawin was still fifth two furlongs from home as Young Mick and Glistening powered to the head of affairs.
But with Jamie Spencer seemingly poised for glory aboard Glistening after mastering the admirable Young Mick, Egan somehow worked the oracle aboard the five-year-old to get up beneath the shadow of the post to land one of the biggest shocks in Ebor history.
The Jamie Osborne-trained Geordieland loomed large three furlongs out for Frankie Dettori but just tired in the closing stages under his big weight.
John Egan said afterwards: "It's absolutely fantastic for Jane - she doesn't have many horses but she does really well and I'm absolutely delighted she gave me the leg up on this fellow.
'He stuck his head out really well - about two I thought I'd get placed but didn't think I'd get up.'
A delighted Chapple-Hyam added: 'I wanted to run him in the Melbourne Cup but lately his form hadn't been good enough to enter.
'He's just come along in the last fortnight really - he had a vet's certificate for Goodwood so it's just been a patience game with him really.
"All my horses have been there or thereabouts and I've had a lot of places so I hope we can keep going. We've always thought a lot of the horse and I thought it (100-1) was a crazy price.'
