Herron wins after seven-year wait

American Tim Herron ended seven years without a victory after a play-off with Sweden's Richard Johnson in the Bank of America Colonial tournament in Fort Worth, Texas, with a 10-foot birdie putt on the second extra hole after they had tied on the 12-under-par mark of 268.

Former European Tour winner Johnson, in his fourth season in the States and looking for his first win, had looked out of it when he three-putted the 16th for bogey.

But the Stockholm golfer, ranked only 174th in the world, then sank birdie putts of 28 and seven feet on the final two greens and drew level when Herron bogeyed the 16th as well.

Par putts of 12 and nine feet forced the tie and after the first play-off hole was shared in par fours they went back to the 17th and Johnson generously applauded his opponent after the winning birdie putt dropped.

It was still Johnson's best-ever performance in the States. His previous highest finish was third in the 2003 FedEx St Jude Classic.

He closed with a 67 to Herron's 68, while Australian Rod Pampling, on level terms with Herron until he double-bogeyed the 15th, finished two behind in third spot.
