Dott wins title after epic battle

Scotland's Graeme Dott was crowned world snooker champion after his gruelling final against Peter Ebdon came to life in grand style on Monday evening.

The 28-year-old from Larkhall, near Glasgow, laid his hands on snooker's top prize, and a winners' cheque of £200,000, after sinking Englishman Ebdon 18-14 in a tense 888.com World Championship final.

The match did not end until 12.50am, the latest-ever finish to a final at the showpiece event at Sheffield.

Dott began this afternoon's third session of the final with an 11-5 lead and stretched that out to 15-7.

Yet Ebdon won four in a row to reduce Dott's lead to 15-11 when the evening session got under way, and then won the next two to put himself right back in contention for the title.

Dott won his first frame of the evening to give himself precious breathing space at 16-13 but Ebdon hit back again.

Dott produced a remarkable clearance to move within a frame of victory at 17-14 and then edged the next to take the title.
