Limerick go second after beating Kildare

Limerick moved into second spot in the eircom First Division table with a hard fought 1-0 victory over Kildare County at Hogan Park tonight.

Striker Derek McCarthy bagged the points for the Blues when he supplied the cutting edge to a Paul Rose cut back from a Robbie Kelleher cross in the 70th minute.

Darren McKenna almost edged his side in front as early as the third minute after he was left in a one on one situation with Limerick keeper Noel Mooney following an under hit back pass.

And the same player almost broke the deadlock just after the break with an in-swinging cross from the left which was cleared off the line by Tommy Barrett.

Robbie Kelleher and Colm Heffernan both went close to doubling their sides advantage in the final quarter-but the home side were left breathing a sigh of relief when Stephen Cooling drilled inches wide at the other end.

This evening's win leaves the Blues, who have won all their games at Hogan Park this season, and who have yet to concede a goal at the venue, four points behind table toppers Shamrock Rovers but with a game in hand.
