Amateur Championships to recommence

The Irish Amateur Boxing Association (IABA) Youth & Boys National Championships will recommence on April 17.

Following a meeting of the IABA Central Council at the National Stadium in Dublin last night, it was decided that the week long tournament will now take place from Easter Monday onwards.

Boxing chiefs decided to defer the Championships last Friday after individuals, believed to be members of a number of Dublin boxing clubs, blockaded the weighing scales at the Stadium.

The action, which affected over 100 young boxers, was taken in protest at the introduction of an IABA waiver form which boxers must sign as a condition of entry into the championships.

The waiver form-which still must be signed as a condition of entry into the Championships on April 17th-was introduced by the IABA Central Council on foot of an overwhelming 18-2 vote and after months of consultation.
