Aussies walk away with medals
Monday, 20 March 2006 08:34Australia literally walked away with another two gold medals at the Commonwealth Games on Monday, as the world's fastest man was preparing to quicken the pace.
Jane Saville and Nathan Deakes successfully defended their 20 kilometre titles as the host-nation made a cleansweep of the walking
Saville completed a hat-trick of Commonwealth titles with a comfortable win in the women's walk, setting a blistering pace by to finish 47 seconds ahead of her younger sister Natalie while team mate Cheryl Webb claimed bronze.
Saville, a bronze medallist at the Athens Olympics in 2004, will long be remembered for her inconsolable grief after being disqualified as she neared the stadium while leading at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, denying her a home gold.
The men's race followed a similar pattern as Deakes, who also won 50 km gold in Manchester, also set off at a cracking tempo. His compatriot Luke Adams took the silver with Jared Tallent collecting the bronze.
