Irish duo break Boston course records
Monday, 20 March 2006 10:20Irish athletes Mark Kenneally and Maria McCambridge were victorious in the Rás na hÉireann USA 5km in Somerville, Boston on Sunday.
Kenneally of Clonliffe Harriers broke the course record in a time of 14.19 minutes, beating former NCAA champion Keith Kelly (14.22) and current Irish Cross Country champion and World Cross Country bound Vinny Mulvey (14.42). Kenneally also broke Kelly's course record of 14.25 set in last year's edition of the race.
Kenneally had finished fourth in the Irish edition of this race two weeks ago in Termonfeckin, Co Louth behind two Russian athletes and an American. This was a welcome return to form for the Celbridge athlete who will race the Bupa 10k in the Phoenix Park on April 9 before turning his attentions to qualifying for
the European Championships in Gothenburg this summer.
McCambridge was an impressive winner of the women's race, smashing the previous course record in a time of 16.07 minutes. McCambridge was paced by her husband Gary Crossan for the race. She will now compete in the World Cross Country in Fukoka, Japan, over 4km at the beginning of April.
Over 2,200 athletes competed in the race which is in its fourth year.
