Villareal through to last 16

Villarreal qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Lille OSC.

In the tight Group D, where goals have been at an absolute premium through all six rounds of qualifying and all four teams had a chance to qualify, it was Villarreal replacement Guayre who broke the deadlock at the Spanish outfit's El Madrigal Stadium.

The striker rounded Lille goalkeeper Sylva beautifully in the 68th minute and slotted home into an empty net after a perfectly-weighted pass from Hector Font.

The result left Villarreal - playing their first-ever Champions league campaign - on top of their group with 10 points from two wins and four draws while Lille finished third on six.

Benfica sealed second spot after a 2-1 home win over Manchester United that left the English giants in bottom spot in the group on goal difference.
