Keane calls time on international career
Friday, 14 October 2005 18:57Roy Keane has announced his retirement from international football. The 34-year-old Manchester United star has decided to step down following Ireland's failure to qualify for the World Cup finals next summer.
His decision follows that of captain Kenny Cunningham, who announced his international retirement after Ireland's World Cup exit was confirmed by a goalless draw with Switzerland on Wednesday.
It is the second time Keane has retired from the international scene, the first occasion after a bust-up with former manager Mick McCarthy prior to the 2002 World Cup.
He returned after the departure of McCarthy the following year and the subsequent appointment of Brian Kerr as his successor.
Keane now appears to be winding down his career having also announced recently that he expects to leave Old Trafford at the end of the current season.
