Finnan escapes charges
Tuesday, 11 October 2005 11:53Liverpool defender Steve Finnan will not face charges after the death of a pensioner who was involved in a collision with his car, it emerged today.
Henry Nelson, 81, from Liverpool, suffered serious injuries when he was struck by Finnan's black Range Rover on January 27 this year. He died five weeks later
in hospital.
The Republic of Ireland international was arrested three months later on suspicion of dangerous driving.
A spokeswoman for the Crown Prosecution Service confirmed Finnan would not be charged in connection with the incident.
She said: "In every case where a matter is referred to the CPS consideration is given to all the evidence.
"This is to ascertain if it is in the public interest to proceed and there is a reasonable prospect of conviction.
"Only if there is sufficient evidence can we proceed."
An inquest into Mr Nelson's death will take place on November 24 when Finnan will be called as a witness.
Finnan, who originally comes from Limerick, started his career at non-league Welling before moving into league football with Birmingham and Notts County.
In November 1998 he was bought by Fulham before moving to Liverpool ahead of the 2003/04 season.
