Irish struggle in Japan

Ireland were brought down to earth with a bump on day four of the World Championships in Gifu, Japan, after Wednesday's repechage success.

The men's heavyweight four failed to qualify for Saturday's 'A' final after finishing fifth in their semi-final. The British quartet of Steve Williams, Alex Partridge, Peter Reed and Andy Hodge claimed top-spot in a time of five minutes 45.46 seconds.

Niamh Ni Cheilleachir also struggled in her semi-final of the lightweight single scull. The Offaly rower finished fifth behind Cuba's Ismaray Marrero.
