Thomas wants to win his place

Charlton winger Jerome Thomas is eager to prove himself and win a place in the Charlton side depite the fact that manager Alan Curbishley is still chasing a number of transfer targets.

Thomas is part of the Charlton squad that features a number of changes from last year's side. Manager Alan Curbishley is trying to prevent a dip in form similar to the one that occurred last season by bringing in new faces.

Other new signings to feature in the victory over Sunderland last weekend included on-loan Chelsea midfielder Alexei Smertin, returning Addick Chris Powell, Darren Ambrose and Darren Bent, who scored two goals.

John Spector, on-loan from Manchester United, is currently experiencing hamstring problems but should feature in the near future.

Thomas has been used as an alternate for Danish Dennis Rommedahl and is not fazed by the prospect of battling for his first-team place.

He said: "I want to play a bigger role than I did last season. I broke into the team and it was a case of me getting used to the Premiership - now the players know and understand my game better and I know theirs better too."
