Charlton ease goalkeeping crisis

Charlton have eased their goalkeeping crisis by signing Norwegian international goalkeeper Thomas Myhre on a one-year deal.

Myhre, 31, left Sunderland during the summer after failing to agree a new deal with the Black Cats and had returned home to play in Norway.

But with former Irish international Dean Kiely out for six weeks with a fractured finger, Charlton manager Alan Curbishley needed to move quickly to sign another goalkeeper to back up 23-year-old Dane Stephan Anderson.

Curbishley initially requested special dispensation from the Premier League to sign another player on loan - he has already used his full quota with the signings of Alexei Smertin and Jonathan Spector on year-long deals.

But when that was refused he turned to the much-travelled Myhre.

"We're delighted to get Thomas on board," said Curbishley.

"When Deano picked up his injury we had a decision to make because if anything happened to Steph, we only had two very young 'keepers with just a handful of games between them.

"We asked for dispensation from the Premier League to see if we could make another loan signing, which we couldn't, so we've brought Thomas in.

"He played more than 30 games in Sunderland's promotion season last year, and he is an international with plenty of experience."
