McGovern's own-goal saves Derry
Friday, 5 August 2005 22:38An own goal from Bray Wanderers centre-half Brian McGovern, who headed Ruaidhri Higgins corner into his own net, gave Derry a share of the spoils at the Brandywell tonight in a game that finished 2-2.
It was a close call for the home side who had been frustrated in 76th minute when Bray netted a highly controversial goal.
With the game locked at 1-1, Bray's David Tyrrell whipped in a corner, Eamon Zayed flicked the ball on and Colm Tresson appeared to hook the ball home with his arm while on the ground.
In the end, a share of the spoils was probably a fair result given the fact that Bray had bossed the first half but they failed to taken advantage of a number of clear-cut scoring chances.
Bray opened the scoring when their Romanian striker, Andrei Georgescue turned the ball home from six yards.
But levelled matters on the stroke of half-time when Ciaran Martyn burst clear to guide the ball post Chris O'Connor.
Mark Farren had a goal disallowed for offside in the 67th minute as Bray keeper, O'Connor, found himself regularly involved in the match.
However, for all Derry's persistence, they failed to grab a third goal which would have extended their winning league run to seven games.
