Hurricane odds on for Irish Derby
Sunday, 19 June 2005 17:37Bookmakers Cashmans make Hurricane Run 1-2 favourite to make amends for his narrow defeat in the Prix du Jockey-Club with victory in the Budweiser Irish Derby. The Andre Fabre-trained colt lost his unbeaten record when failing by a neck to catch Shamardal at Chantilly two weeks ago.
That was the first running of the French Derby since it was controversially cut in distance to 10 and a half furlongs, and the son of Montjeu will tackle a mile and a half at the Curragh next Sunday for the first time. Next in the betting at 3-1 is another French colt, Walk In The Park.
John Hammond's charge - another son of Montjeu - will also be seeking Classic compensation as he was runner-up to Motivator, beaten five lengths, in the Vodafone Derby at Epsom. Plans for the Aidan O'Brien stable are fluid and Cashmans go 5-1 the Ballydoyle team to capture the Irish Derby for a fourth time.
Available at 8-1 is the Clive Brittain-trained Bahar Shumaal, who is set to be supplemented on Tuesday at a cost of Ç95,000, while Shalapour is 16-1 to give Irish trainer John Oxx his third success in the race.
