Clause prevents Robert from facing Toon

New Portsmouth signing Laurent Robert will not be eligible to play against his previous club Newcastle next season.

The 30-year-old arrived at Fratton Park for an undisclosed fee after Magpies boss Graeme Souness made it clear the winger was not part of his plans.

Robert, who has been capped by France, will not have the opportunity to face his former team-mates.

"Chairman Freddy Shepherd has confirmed that Laurent Robert won't be allowed to play against the Magpies for his new club Portsmouth next season," read a statement on Newcastle's website.
