Smicer signs for Bordeaux

Liverpool midfielder Vladimir Smicer has signed a two-year contract with Bordeaux.

The Czech international passed a medical at the Parc Lescure today and agreed terms on his switch from Anfield.

"Bordeaux is a beautiful seaside city and Les Girondins were always at the top of the French league," the 32-year-old told Czech daily Sport.

"The last season was not ideal for them. They will want to get back to the top in the new one and I will be glad to be able to help them."

Smicer, who was also a reported target of Charlton and Birmingham, revealed Bordeaux had been interested in acquiring his services last summer but the player had to have an operation on a knee injury.

He added: "Out of all the offers I had, I like this one the most.

"Bordeaux wanted me last year after the European Championships but I had to undergo knee surgery and was sidelined for half a season.

"Their interest remained and that is the most important thing for any player when seeking a transfer."

Smicer spent three years at Lens before moving to Anfield for £4.2million in 1999.

The highlight of his time on Merseyside came when he scored the second goal as Rafael Benitez's men stormed back from 3-0 down on their way to Champions League final success against AC Milan.
