Goal-hero Smicer is set to leave
Friday, 27 May 2005 13:53Struggling French side Bordeaux are hoping to secure the services of Liverpool's Vladimir Smicer, whose contract at Anfield has expired, according to the Czech Republic international's agent.
The 32-year-old Smicer gave Reds fans the perfect farewell gift in Wednesday's dramatic Champions League final win over Italian side AC Milan, scoring a goal in regulation play and a penalty in the decisive shoot-out.
And his agent Pavel Paska said Smicer's performance have convinced Bordeaux that he is the midfielder they are after.
"Right after the final I got a call from Bordeaux asking about Smicer. They told me they want to sign him straight away," Paska is reported to have told the Sport daily.
Other reports suggest that Smicer could also sign for his former club Lens, where he played from 1996 to 1999 before heading for Anfield.
Smicer, who has scored 25 goals in 72 appearances for his country, made a tentative return to football late this season following a difficult operation on his right knee shortly after the 2004 European championships.
Bordeaux avoided the drop from the French top flight this season, although the 1999 league winners could finish the campaign in lowly sixth from bottom.
