Spurs land Canadian defender Stalteri
Monday, 16 May 2005 14:50Tottenham have made Canada international defender Paul Stalteri their first signing of the summer after landing him on a 'Bosman' style move from Werder Bremen.
The 27-year-old full-back was an integral part of the Bremen side that won the league and cup double and helped them to the last-16 of this season's Champions League before getting knocked out by French side Lyon.
Tottenham sporting director Frank Arnesen said: "Paul Stalteri is a defender who can play in midfield. He is a multi-functional player, who can play on both sides."
"He has come from a tough environment at Werder Bremen and their players are well known for their mentality. His biggest success was last year winning the double and he has now had good experience of European football."
"I am delighted to get him in. There were a lot of clubs chasing him including some from England. He will be a big plus for the squad."
Spurs have also signed Teemu Tainio from French side Auxerre and Tom Huddlestone from Derby for next season.
Meanwhile, midfielder Rohan Ricketts has been released by Spurs after struggling to make an impression.
Arnesen added: "We have decided to let Rohan go after three seasons at the club. He wasn't involved in the first team a lot over the last season. It is important at his age to be a regular in the squad and it is much better for him to move on. We wish him well."
