Death of Down great Pat Rice

Former All-Ireland winning Down footballer Pat Rice has died.

Pat made his senior debut for his county in 1955, going on to play at corner-back in the legendary double-winning team of 1960 and 1961.

Apart from those famous wins, the Castlewellan man, affectionately known as 'Big Pat', amassed an impressive inter-county winners medals haul - National League in '60 and '62, Railway Cup in '60 and '63, three Ulster Championship medals in '59, '60 and '61, a St Brendan's Cup medal in '60, four Dr McKenna Cup medals and one Dr Lagan Cup medal.

He also won numerous honours at club level and was selected to play for Ireland against the Combined Universities - the equivalent of an All Star award today.
