Weir wants Scottish pride restored

Scotland legend Doddie Weir claims he does not care who gets the vacant Scottish managerial role, just as long as they can restore some pride to the national team.

The former Newcastle and Borders lock believes Scotland are at an all-time low following Matt Williams' ill-fated reign, which has come to an end after his contract was terminated by the Scottish Rugby Union yesterday.

But Weir predicts rugby chiefs will be spoilt for choice when it comes to selecting Williams' successor.

Weir said: "I have no preferences at all. I just think we need to get someone who can bring back respect, continuity and support for the national team.

"What is needed is for whoever takes over to take the team forward. But there is an international job up for grabs and I imagine there will be a few CVs sent to the SRU, even though there will be a lot of pressure on whoever takes over."

However, former Scotland international Scott Hastings believes the SRU will have to look further afield to replace Williams.

He told Scotland Today: "It has to be an interim appointment in the meantime, because we play the Barbarians next month and then a Test match early in June in Romania."
