Bowyer and Dyer questioned by police

Newcastle midfielders Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer could face criminal proceedings after police confirmed that they have interviewed the duo over their on-field punch-up during the match against Aston Villa.

Northumbria Police have questioned the players about the April 2 incident at St James' Park.

Bowyer and Dyer traded punches in front of a packed stadium during the Magpies'defeat by Villa and both players were sent off for their part in the fight. Yesterday Bowyer admitted to a Football Association charge of violent conduct.

A Northumbria Police spokesman told the Daily Mail: "Two people involved in an incident on the pitch at St James' Park on April 2 were interviewed under caution by officers."

A file is now being prepared for the Crown Prosecution Service.

Bowyer was hit with a club record fine of six weeks' wages - understood to be a massive £200,000 - and a final written warning.

The 28-year-old former Leeds star will serve the third match of his automatic four-game ban for the red card when he sits out tonight's trip to Norwich. The suspension included an extra game because it was the second time he has been sent off this season.
