Eccentric excellence

Eccentric put up a bold front-running performance to take the  Littlewoods Bet Direct Winter Derby.

John Egan had the Andrew Reid-trained four-year-old smartly out of the stalls and took the field along at a good gallop.

The rider then kicked on at the turn, slipping the field, and Eccentric (7-2) kept on strongly to hold the late challenge of Blythe Knight (66-1) by a length and a quarter.

Hurricane Alan (12-1) was a similar distance back in third.

Reid said: "This was the plan. We always wanted to win the trial and then come here and win the big one."

"This horse has run consistently all season. Provided I stuck to the plan and didn't change the way he was trained I was always confident he would win."
