Saturday's FA Premiership previews
Friday, 18 March 2005 16:57There are injury worries for a number of clubs ahead of tomorrow's busy schedule of FA Premiership action.
Charlton v West Brom
Charlton boss Alan Curbishley has a few injury concerns as he prepares for tomorrow's visit of West Brom.
Midfielder Radostin Kishishev missed the 2-0 win over Tottenham on Wednesday night with a recurrence of his hamstring problem, and could be rested again tomorrow, while winger Jerome Thomas (calf), Dennis Rommedahl (wrist) and striker Shaun Bartlett (dead leg) face fitness tests.
Francis Jeffers, Jason Euell and Jonatan Johansson came on against Spurs and will be looking for a recall to the starting XI, while Mark Fish, Jonathan Fortune, Kevin Lisbie and Bryan Hughes are all also pressing for inclusion.
West Brom manager Bryan Robson has a near clean bill of health as his side seek their first away win of the campaign at Charlton. Midfielder Andy Johnson, who is out for the remainder of the season after a knee operation, is the only absentee.
On-loan Manchester United player Kieran Richardson has shaken off a slight calf injury which forced him to miss a day's training after the mid-week defeat at Chelsea.
Blackburn v Arsenal
Scotland striker Paul Dickov returns to the Blackburn squad for the match against Arsenal at Ewood Park tomorrow. Dickov was rested in midweek when Rovers secured a point against Liverpool following groin and thigh problems.
However Robbie Savage could again be sidelined because of a troublesome groin while David Thompson remains doubtful with a knee injury.
Arsenal could be without Dennis Bergkamp and Robert Pires. Bergkamp has picked up a calf injury while Pires has been laid low with flu and they may join Thierry Henry (calf), Sol Campbell (ankle) and Edu (knee) on the sidelines.
Gilberto may get his first action since September 18 - the Brazilian midfielder, who has been out with a fractured vertebrae, played 65 minutes for the Gunners' reserves on Monday.
Chelsea v Crystal Palace
Chelsea will make a late decision on whether to include Arjen Robben in the squad for the clash with Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge.
Robben was widely expected to return against West Brom in midweek but assistant boss Steve Clarke hinted that he may return against Palace or be left out until the end of the forthcoming international matches.
Chelsea's only other doubt for the game surrounds striker Didier Drogba. The Ivory Coast ace, whose goal against Albion put them 11 points clear of Manchester United at the top of the Premiership on Tuesday night, was kicked in the groin in the closing stages.
Midfielder Scott Parker is also available after recovering from a broken foot and Ricardo Carvalho is likely to be recalled in place of Robert Huth.
Crystal Palace hope to welcome back Darren Powell and Aki Riihilahti from injury. However, Greece midfielder Vassilis Lakis is suspended following his red card against Manchester United in the Eagles last league match two weeks ago.
Defender Powell (calf) and Finland midfielder Riihilahti (thigh) have benefited from some extra time off and could return to the squad but Nicola Ventola (fractured ankle), Tommy Black (broken leg) and Danny Butterfield (hernia) are continuing their recovery.
Manchester United v Fulham
Fulham are likely to rely on the squad that lost two of their last three games for the daunting trip to Manchester United as midfielder Mark Pembridge (calf) and centre-half Ian Pearce (back) are still not fit.
Manager Chris Coleman is considering recalling German full back Moritz Volz as a starter to give the impressive Liam Rosenior a break, while Collins John may stay in the line-up, with Tomasz Radzinski ready to cover Andy Cole who faces his former club.
Ryan Giggs will remain on the sidelines for Manchester United's clash with Fulham.
Giggs had his nose reset on Monday after his clash with Milan's Gennaro Gattuso during the Red Devils' Champions League exit 11 days ago and Sir Alex Ferguson has decided it is still too sore for the Welshman to be risked even though he is fit enough to play.
Darren Fletcher and Louis Saha (both knee) are still missing but Brazilian World Cup winner Kleberson is back in the squad, as is Gary Neville, who has missed the last three games with an ankle injury.
Portsmouth v Newcastle
Portsmouth goalkeeper Kostas Chalkias is to be dropped to the bench after conceding 13 goals in his last six matches, with Jamie Ashdown replacing him for tomorrow's Fratton Park clash with Newcastle.
Midfielder Richard Hughes returns to the squad after overcoming a hamstring injury but former Newcastle defender Andy Griffin will not be fit to face his old club because of a calf strain.
Long-term absentees Hayden Foxe (foot), Vincent Pericard and Svetoslav Todorov (both knee) remain sidelined.
French defender Jean-Alain Boumsong returns to the Newcastle squad as the Magpies look for a ninth successive win. He was ineligible for Wednesday's 4-0 UEFA Cup victory over Olympiacos, and with Titus Bramble only just on the road to recovery after surgery on a hernia the former Rangers man will boost manager Graeme Souness' squad.
Celestine Babayaro continues his battle against a knee problem, while striker Shola Ameobi is out with a niggling hip injury, although Patrick Kluivert returns after missing the game in midweek with a sore knee.
Tottenham v Manchester City
Spurs will recall rested midfielder Simon Davies for their Premiership clash with Manchester City at White Hart Lane tomorrow.
Davies was omitted from the side that lost 2-0 to Charlton in midweek because coach Martin Jol did not want to exhaust the Wales international who had played nine consecutive games since recovering from a virus.
Jol will again make a late decision on Mido, who is still struggling with a groin strain, while Pedro Mendes (toe) is definitely out - but Sean Davis is in the squad after returning against Charlton following knee surgery.
McManaman has picked up a calf strain while Thatcher has a hamstring injury.
Norwich v Bolton
Bolton manager Sam Allardyce is weighing up his attacking options ahead of tomorrow's game against Norwich as El-Hadji Diouf starts a three-match ban.
Henrik Pedersen and Ricardo Vaz Te are pushing to be recalled with the team anxious to bounce back following the FA Cup defeat by Arsenal.
Nigerian captain Jay-Jay Okocha remains doubtful with the hamstring injury that forced him to sit out the tie against the Gunners.
Norwich boss Nigel Worthington looks set to keep faith with the same starting XI for tomorrow's trip to Bolton.
Denmark captain Thomas Helveg has now recovered from a calf strain, which kept him out for two months, and could be on the bench at the Reebok.
England Under-19 striker Ryan Jarvis had a run-out for the reserves in midweek, while David Bentley and Mathias Svensson are both in training again after long lay-offs with knee injuries, as is Jim Brennan (ankle) - but all are still some way from a first-team return.
