Shearer eyes UEFA Cup glory
Wednesday, 16 March 2005 09:43Newcastle skipper Alan Shearer is hoping the best memories for his club are still to come as the club completes a century in Europe.
The Magpies will welcome Olympiacos to St James' Park tonight for their 100th game in European competition with a place in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup at stake.
Shearer has played in some huge nights over the years, including a 2-2 draw with Inter Milan at the San Siro and a memorable 3-2 victory at Feyenoord in the Champions League.
And he was a spectator on the night in September 1997 when Faustino Asprilla plundered a hat-trick to claim a famous 3-2 win over the mighty Barcelona.
However, the 34-year-old is banking on a few more special occasions as his quest to lift a first trophy in a black and white shirt continues.
"I enjoyed the Milan one away when we played Inter Milan," he said when asked about his favourite memories. "The Newcastle fans behind that goal that evening were incredible. The Feyenoord game when we had to go over there and win, that was a great atmosphere as well.
"Then there was the Barcelona night - I was not involved here when Tino scored the hat-trick, but that was a great occasion.
"But I am hopefully going to be sitting here in a couple of months' time talking about our greatest night. That is our aim."
