Briareus takes debut win over hurdles

Briareus stepped up on his debut effort over hurdles to take the opening contest on Mother's Day at Kempton Park this afternoon.

But rather than doing it for mother, it was a father-and-son team who claimed the honours as the Andrew Balding-trained gelding triumphed for part-owner Ian Balding.

A somewhat frustrating character on the Flat, racing over timber appears to have brought the best out of 8-1 chance Briareus, who showed considerable determination to rally and catch Classic Role on the run-in to score by a neck.
