Koeman quits Ajax after UEFA Cup exit

Ronald Koeman has resigned as coach of Dutch champions Ajax following their elimination from the UEFA Cup at the hands of French side Auxerre.

Ajax were knocked out of Europe's less lucrative club competition last night when Auxerre scored two second-half goals to secure a 3-1 victory.

A statement from the former European champions quoted Koeman as saying: "Last night's result was decisive. I don't have the strength or the energy to bounce back and make this team work more effectively."

Koeman, a former Holland international famed for his dead ball skills, had been coach of Ajax for three years.

His contract was due to expire in July 2006.
