Birmingham close in on Bellamy deal

Newcastle striker Craig Bellamy is on the verge of a securing his escape from Tyneside after the Magpies agreed a £6million fee with Premiership rivals Birmingham.

City have been given permission to talk to the 25-year-old Welshman hours after United manager Graeme Souness confirmed he would never pick the player again as long as Souness was at St James' Park.

"We have agreed a fee of £6million with Birmingham for the transfer of Craig Bellamy and Birmingham have been given permission to talk to the player," said a club spokesman.

However, Bellamy's agent Steve Horner remains in the dark about the bid and insisted Bellamy would not be travelling to the midlands for talks until the situation was clarified to him and his client.

"I am still awaiting confirmation from Newcastle that a bid has been accepted and until I receive it there is nothing I or Craig can do,"  he told the Press Association.

Horner confirmed that if other clubs match the fee then he and Bellamy are also free to talk to them.
