FA Premiership round up
Saturday, 18 September 2004 17:25There were wins for Man City and Blackburn, with draws elsewhere, on a busy day of English Premiership action.
Norwich 0 Aston Villa 0
Norwich are still searching for their first Barclays Premiership victory of the season on a day when Aston Villa faltered on the road again.
City manager Nigel Worthington can again thank the brilliant Robert Green for at least giving his side their fourth point of a campaign which is so far proving frustrating.
While man-of-the-match Green denied Villa on four separate occasions throughout a mundane 90 minutes, it is unlikely Villa boss David O'Leary will take any heart from his side's fourth successive away match without a win.
West Bromwich Albion 1 Fulham 1
Kanu saved a point for West Bromwich Albion in a crazy climax at The Hawthorns.
Neil Clement and Andy Cole were both sent off for their part in a late mass brawl involving almost every player on the pitch.
Cole had grabbed a 71st minute lead for Fulham, who were already down to 10 men when Papa Bouba Diop saw red.
Albion debutant Robert Earnshaw missed a first half penalty as the Baggies remained winless in the Premiership this season.
Birmingham 1 Charlton 1
Dwight Yorke scored his first goal for 10-man Birmingham today to secure a point against Charlton.
Yorke came off the bench to nod home a corner from Muzzy Izzet after Damien Johnson had been dismissed for two yellow cards.
It was blow for Charlton, who had taken the lead through Luke Young following a mistake by goalkeeper Maik Taylor.
Blackburn 1 Portsmouth 0
Matt Jansen came off the bench to ensure new manager Mark Hughes got his Blackburn managerial career off to a winning start against Portsmouth.
The 26-year-old striker has endured a terrible two years since a motorcycle accident left him badly injured.
He was out of favour with former boss Graeme Souness but made an instant impact for Hughes to grab Rovers' first win of the season.
Crystal Palace 1 Manchester City 2
Two goals from Nicolas Anelka earned Manchester City three much-needed points against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park today.
The Frenchman struck twice in the second half, once from the penalty spot to give City the lead.
Andy Johnson hit back with a penalty for Palace but the Londoners were condemned to a fifth straight Barclays Premiership defeat.
