Queiroz confirms Old Trafford return
Thursday, 3 June 2004 10:53Sacked Real Madrid coach Carlos Queiroz has confirmed he is set to return to Manchester United as manager Alex Ferguson's assistant. And he has his sights set on becoming the future Old Trafford boss.
Queiroz, who was sacked after a disappointing first season as Real coach, told Portuguese newspapers that he is set to put pen to paper.
"It's practically a done deal. There are just some legal details to sort out," Queiroz said. "Manchester United's offer is not one to turn down. It's a long term contract which puts me as favourite to become club manager."
According to reports, 51-year-old Queiroz will sign a three-year deal with an option for an additional year, and would be ready to step into Ferguson's shoes when his contract runs out in June 2006.
Queiroz left Manchester United for the Bernabeu last summer on a two-year deal to become Real head coach. But his failure to win a trophy saw him relieved of his duties after just one season.
He was linked with the vacant managerial post at White Hart Lane although Spurs director of football Frank Arnesen said they were still running the rule over different possibilities.
