Drogheda and Bohs must meet again
Saturday, 13 September 2003 19:46Drogheda United and Bohemians must meet again next Tuesday at 7.45pm, at Dalymount Park, following tonight's 1-1 draw at O2 Park, in an end-to-end Carlsberg Cup quarter-final.
Following their impressive league win over Waterford United last week, Paul Doolin's new charges' chances of progressing looked good early on. And they had their noses in front after twenty minutes, as striker Andy Myler headed a Declan O'Brien cross past the flailing Shay Kelly for the lead.
The game looked United's for the taking as chances came thick and fast against a Bohemians' side missing the steadying presence of defender Colin Hawkins. The second half saw them have three one-ones with Gypsies' stopper Kelly and also hit the crossbar through top Cup scorer Declan O'Brien, but their best chance fell to Myler on the hour mark.
The striker failed to convert a glorious chance to put the result beyond doubt, as he decided to chip his penalty kick, and although sending Kelly the wrong way, he clipped the crossbar and watched in horror, as midfielder Dom Tierney's follow-up was brilliantly saved by Kelly's outstretched leg.
Stephen Kenny brought on teenage striker Stephen Ward, scorer against Skerries in the previous round, as the visitors pushed for an equaliser, in a 3-4-3 formation.
Skipper Kevin Hunt was lucky to stay on the pitch following a bad challenge on Sean Gallagher inside the final ten minutes, before a rebound from a goal-bound Ward shot was diverted into the Drogheda net by the looping header of Simon Webb, for the leveller in the third minute of injury time. Webb's first goal of the season was nearly followed up by a winner from Glen Crowe, but it would have be a misjustice to their County Louth hosts, had the eircom League champions snatched the winner.
