Alamshar shows his class to take King George at Ascot

watch

Alamshar, trained by John Oxx and ridden by Johnny Murtagh, ran out a brilliant winner of the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot today.

The Irish Derby hero (13-2) went clear turning into the straight, having tracked pacemaker Izdiham from the start. Sulamani (9-2) tried hard to get to him in the final furlong and a half but could not reel him in. Epsom Derby winner Kris Kin (7-2) was third.

Alamshar had finished behind Kris Kin at Epsom before stamping himself a colt of the highest quality at the Curragh.

Connections were worried about the amount of rain that had fallen at Ascot before today's midsummer showpiece, but the John Oxx-trained colt looked perfectly at ease on it and was going supremely well as the runners approached the home turn.

He stretched clear of his field when Johnny Murtagh pressed the button and the result never looked in question from two furlongs out. Frankie Dettori on Sulamni was three and a half lengths back in second.
