Blatter opposed to World Cup changes

FIFA President Sepp Blatter has signalled his intent to oppose a proposition to expand the World Cup finals from 32 to 36 teams.

The South American proposal to expand the finals, starting with the 2006 World Cup in Germany, has the backing of both Brazil and Argentina however Blatter is refusing to even contemplate the issue.

"I will fight to make sure that we stay with 32 teams. I want to avoid internal fighting but the South Americans have to understand. In the decision between 32 and 36 teams, the credibility of the world's biggest football festival is at stake and we want to preserve that credibility. It's as simple as that," he insisted.

Under the proposed changes, a mini-playoff round would be introduced following the initial group stages; however, German organisers of the event have also voiced their opposition to such a change.

The South Americans have until June 28, when FIFA meets in Paris on the eve of the Confederations Cup final, to persuade voters on the executive committee to endorse the 36-team format.
