Gregory sacked by Derby County
Friday, 9 May 2003 11:47John Gregory has been sacked by Derby County following an inquiry launched in the wake of "serious allegations" made against him. The former Aston Villa boss was relieved of duty on March 21, with the Pride Park club appointing interim manager George Burley on March 31.
Club officials have been discussing the results of an inquiry started following Gregory's suspension. Gregory is to appeal against the decision. A club statement read: "The appeal will be heard by the chairman as soon as is practicable. The club will have nothing more to say on this matter until the result of the appeal is known." Along with Gregory, the Rams have also suspended coach Ross MacLaren and physiotherapist Stuart Walker in the wake of the, as yet, undisclosed allegations.
Gregory, who sensationally quit Aston Villa shortly before his appointment at Pride Park, had been beset by off-field problems, not least the public falling out with Craig Burley. The midfielder and former skipper claimed Gregory had interfered with treatment he was receiving for injuries and had excluded him from the first team after he failed to agree a contract termination and then turned down a loan move to Middlesbrough. There were also tensions with senior players including defender Horacio Carbonari, who has now left the club, and midfielders Simo Valakari and Giorgi Kinkladze.
