Gregory hit with fine and ban

Derby County manager John Gregory has been hit with a five-match touchline ban and a £7,500 fine by the Football Association. Gregory has been punished for using abusive and insulting language towards the fourth official, Steve Tomlinson, during the First Division match with Portsmouth at Fratton Park on February 8.

An FA disciplinary disciplinary commission dealt with the matter after former Aston Villa boss Gregory, who was banished from the dug-out by referee Clive Penton for his remarks, did not request a personal hearing. The touchline ban will come into effect from March 31 for Gregory who is alleged to have sworn twice at the fourth official during the Rams 6-2 defeat.

Gregory's previous disciplinary record was taken into account when deciding the severity of the punishment. He had received a touchline ban in 1999 when in charge of Villa for remarks towards another fourth official - Andy D'Urso - during a Premiership game with Leicester at Filbert Street.
