Warne to quit one-day internationals
Wednesday, 22 January 2003 07:18Shane Warne today announced his retirement from one-day international cricket. The 33-year-old Australian leg-spinner announced his decision to quit Australia's one-day side after the World Cup, which starts next month, upon his arrival in Sydney with his team-mates.
He is his country's most successful bowler of all time in both Test and ODI cricket with 491 wickets in 107 Tests and 288 victims in 191 appearances in the limited-overs game. But dislocating his shoulder against England in Melbourne on December 15 has given the Victorian plenty of time to think over his future.
There is a chance he will return for Australia this week during the best-of-three VB Series finals against England. However, any matches he does play will be his last on Australian soil.
Flanked by captain Ricky Ponting at a hastily-arranged press conference, Warne said: 'In recent times I have come to a decision speaking to Ricky, John Buchanan, the selectors, the Australian Cricket Board and my own friends and family. I have come to the decision that I am going to retire from one-day international cricket when the World Cup finishes.'
