FA not bothered by latest Keane controversy
Thursday, 14 November 2002 18:14Roy Keane is expected to escape the wrath of the English FA for a change, after revealing that he regrets only pushing Alan Shearer rather than punching him before being sent off at Newcastle last season.
Shearer had wound Keane up with his time-wasting tactics. In his new video - Roy Keane: As I See It - Keane says: "I was sent off for pushing him (Shearer) - but if you`re going to get sent off, you might as well punch him properly. It's the same punishment. You might as well get hung for a sheep as a lamb. It was just a push, though. Ridiculous."
Keane has already been banned for five games and fined £150,000 for saying in his autobiography that he meant to hurt Manchester City's Alfie Haaland and it was feared that the FA may again take a stern view of Keane's comments. However, it is believed that FA officials do not believe this latest row to be serious and because Keane was suspended following his dismissal at Newcastle, think the matter has been dealt with.
Keane was in the Old Trafford stands to watch United seal top spot in Champions League Group F with a 2-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen last night. Although he is unlikely to be fit for the first two matches of the second stage, he should be back in action by the time the competition resumes in December.
